Bank Under Siege, the Spanish heist drama series is streaming on Netflix. When the first episode began, it was believed that the bingers would be treated to a thriller like La casa de papel or Money Heist. The two part Spanish series has set a benchmark for all heist series. But this time, for reasons unknown Bank Under Siege fails to live up to the expectations.
Bank Under Siege plot
Three months after a failed coup in Spain in 1981, eleven masked armed men storm the Central Bank of Barcelona and hold more than 300 people hostage. The gang of robbers is led by José Juan Martínez Gómez, also known as Number 1. The robbers demand the release of ‘heroes’ of February 23 coup including Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero.
While the drama is unfolding, a rookie journalist Maider has her first day at Barcelona Daily. She rushes to the spot with her colleague Bernie, who is mostly under the influence of alcohol. While collecting leads, she is confronted by Fransisco Lopez, a police detective who is investigating the robbery at the bank.
Citadel Honey Bunny review: Varun Dhawan-Samantha starrer spy universe show is gripping
As the episodes unfold, it turns out that the siege at the Central Bank is not just another bank robbery. There are different layers to it. Maider leaves no stone unturned to uncover the truth behind the heist, often sidestepping her boss Isabell.
Bank Under Siege: What’s missing?
The trailer of Bank Under Siege generated a lot of buzz before it started streaming on our devices. Miguel Herran, who plays José Juan Martínez Gómez, won our hearts as Anibal Cortes alias Rio in Money Heist. Hovik Keuchkerian, the alcoholic photojournalist essayed the role of Santiago Lopez alias Bogota and shared the screen with Herran in Money Heist.
It was expected that the duo would once again leave us glued to our devices from the beginning till the end. Herran does remind us of the carefree Rio, but sadly Keuchkerian has too less to offer. The viewers are left wondering why nothing more is revealed about his character in the show, given the fact that José Juan and Maider have back stories.
At the end, it turns out that what promised to be a thrilling web show at the end of 2024, turns out to be a big disappointment. TBH.
