“The most strongest, the most powerful, the most dangerous creature on this whole earth is a woman who knows how to think. Ain’t nothing she can’t do,” says Will Smith’s character Richard Williams to his aspiring tennis-playing daughters Serena and Venus Williams in the 2021 sports biographical film King Richard.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Zach Baylin, the film is set to leave Netflix on January 18. So I thought, why not watch it now? Afterall, King Richard won Smith his first Academy Award.
King Richard plot
Richard Williams lives in Compton, California, with his wife Brandy, two daughters Venus and Serena and three step-daughters. He had planned the careers of both his daughters before they were born.

Richard leaves no stone unturned to groom his daughters, who he is sure will become one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He videotapes them while playing to advertise their skills.
After unsuccessful attempts to find a coach for his daughters, he sees Paul Cohen, in the middle of practice with John McEnroe and Pete Sampras. He finally manages to persuade Cohen to coach his daughters. However since Williams cannot afford such expensive coaching, it is Venus who gets the chance to be mentored by Cohen.
Serena is mentored by her mother Brandy, who never gives up. The film chronicles the struggles Richard and his family face to help the Williams sisters achieve their goals.

Written by Zach Baylin and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, King Richard features Will Smith playing the titular role of Richard Williams. Aunjanue Ellis plays the role of Richard’s wife Orcene ‘Brandy’ Price. Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton essay the roles of Venus Williams and Serena Williams respectively. Both the tennis legends were on board as executive producers of the film.
