Imagine getting a call out of nowhere and the person on the other side starts screaming for help. Spooky isn’t it? It wouldn’t be less shocking to know that the caller is from a different time frame. The Call, starring Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo is a critically acclaimed 2020 South Korean psychological thriller film. It is based on the 2011 British and Puerto Rican film The Caller, written by Sergio Casci and directed by Matthew Parkhill.
The Call plot
Kim Seo-yeon visits her childhood home in a rural area. There, she find an old cordless phone. One day, she gets a distress call from a girl screaming for help. The caller identifies herself as Oh Young-sook, who claims to be under threat from her mother. After disconnecting the call multiple times, she finally dials her.
Both Seo-yeon and Young-sook have a common link: a troubled relationship with their mothers. Young-sook’s mother had died and she lives with her adoptive mom, who is a tantrik. Seo-yeon learns that her ‘new friend’ lives in the same home but in 1999. Both strike up a conversation and start to know each other.
Young-sook learns that Seo-yeon’s father had died in a fire and she blamed her estranged mother for his death. She prevents the fire and now Seo-yeon has a happy family. On the other hand, Seo-yeon reveals to her new friend that the latter will be killed by her exorcist mother.
Young-sook not only saves herself but also kills her abusive mother. But just as it seemed that everything would be fine: there comes a twist. Seo-yeon comes to know that Young-sook has become a serial killer.
The Meg: Jason Statham-starrer science fiction thriller is a decent watch
This scary truth sends shiver down the spine of Seo-yeon as victims begin to disappear from her life. But it is not easy to escape now. Whether she can free herself from Young-sook, is interesting to watch.
The Call: Should you watch?
The Call is an edge-of-the-seat thriller, leaving you wondering what would happen next. The screenplay is tightly woven and you would not want to leave your couch even for a second. Both Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo work like a ‘jodi’ to blow your mind. If you are fond of some crazy thriller stuff, we recommend you to watch it.
