Science fiction is another genre that I am fond of after spy thrillers. I watched the Jurassic Park film franchise growing up. While surfing Netflix, I came across The Meg, the 2018 science fiction action thriller starring Jason Statham.

A trailer showing a little girl playing opposite a glass popped up on my screen. Suddenly a shark-like thing appears on the screen from somewhere and the girl is shocked and petrified at the same moment.

The Meg plot

Directed by John Turtletaub, The Meg is a cinematic adaptation of Steve Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.

A billionaire Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson) meets Dr Minway Zhang (Winston Chao) at an underwater research facility Mana One. He and his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing) are supervising an underwater mission to explore a deeper section of the Mariana Trench.

However, the submersible is hit by an unidentified creature and the crew is stuck. To save them, Suyin attempts a rescue mission. The submersible she is travelling in, is also attacked by the mysterious ‘monster’ as her daughter describes.

Who will save Suyin and the crew? The search zeroes in on Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), who attempted to save the lives of a crew on board a nuclear submarine, that was, coincidentally attacked by the same unidentified creature. After much persuasion, he agrees to be a part of the mission as the submersible was being driven by his ex-wife Lori.

Now, Taylor has to save both Lori and the mission supervisor Suyin. Jonas goes down and saves all but one member of the crew, who sacrifices himself to let others escape. It turns out that the creature is none other than a Megalodon, a prehistoric species of shark believed to be extinct.

The ‘Meg’ is no ordinary shark. It breaches the thermocline of hydrogen sulphide and is now above the sea. The Mana One crew has a huge task ahead, kill the Meg and save the lives of people.

The Meg: Should you watch or not?

Well, The Meg TBH is a decent thriller. Although it has a predictable ending, there are moments when you are on edge, waiting for what the giant shark do. Jason Statham, one of my favourite action stars, does not disappoint either.

The verdict is: You can watch this if you wish. Else, finish your pending work.
